Well Being Tip No 10

Being AWAKE & In touch with REALITY
This is about finding happiness within ourselves.
Most of us seek happiness outside of ourselves. We go through life expecting something or someone else, or being somewhere else, will make us happy.
We strive to find happiness through material means, and through relationships with others. Our parents, family’s, a partner, friends, a family of your own, a good job, nice car, beautiful house, great holidays.
When we get these things, and we still don’t feel happy, we are often even more disappointed. If the holiday we’d been so looking forward to went pear shaped, after all – we’ve been looking forward to it for so long!
Yet we keep on looking for happiness in a different car, a different husband or wife, a new house, a different job. These things can make us feel happy for sure, but often only temporarily. The ‘somethings missing’ keeps coming back.
Hoping for a ‘better future’ is chasing an elusive dream. “Better luck tomorrow” – only tomorrow never comes.
We ‘look to the future’ and ‘dwell on the past’. This means that we are rarely ‘in the moment’, being in the ‘now’.
Chasing better times in the future means that we make life a journey where our hopeful destination is always out of our reach, and we never ‘get there’.
When you look back on your life, realise that ‘that was it, your life – up until ‘now’. Its gone, you can’t have it back. The future is ahead, you can’t have that yet either and never will, the future is always the future.
Spending time lost in the past, feeling sad about the past, mourning things that have gone or events and emotions that ‘were’, what someone did to you or you did to them. These have gone. They are not ‘now’.
Worrying about what might be ahead, how you are going to cope with this deadline or that appointment. If you are ever going to be happy! Whats the point? You cannot change it by worrying about it. You only change yourself, become anxious, low, depressed, tired through losing sleep etc etc.
Be in the moment and feel aware of your presence..
This is all you can ever have. This is where you will find real happiness. Its your birthright. There is no other way than being present in the moment. This is…..Your Life.
Remember the breathing exercise? Try it again, stop what you are doing, and feel the reality of being in the now, your experience in this moment.
If you are thinking about what you’ve got to do next, or what happened yesterday or this morning, stop.
Be aware only of the stillness and awareness that you exist, this surpasses all thinking, doing and activity.
This is your natural state, which is there whether or not you are busy doing something, thinking, striving to achiever the goals you have set yourself. Think about what animals do – they eat when they are hungry, drink when they need water, run, fly or swim if they find themselves in danger.  In between, they simply exist, Be. We forget about this state of ‘Being’, because we are rushing around looking for happiness, and are too tired at the end of the day to find it either.
There is nothing wrong in having goals, but be in the moment while you work towards them.
Look back on the tips you have read. Make each one count, when you breath – be aware of your breathing as often as you can. When you drink water, give it your full attention. When you go for a walk, feel the breeze, the temperature, your surroundings, the sky, sounds, the light, scents – be alive and experiencing the moment!
Don’t worry if a thought comes into your head, but don’t let thought take you out of being in the moment.
Be aware of a silent but powerful sense of Presence. Your presence. This is where happiness is found, not in other places or people or things.
This Being Human – By Rumi

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
Some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
Who violently sweep your house
Empty of its furniture
Still treat each guest honourably.
He may be cleaning you out
For some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
Meet them at the door laughing,
And invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
Because each has been sent
              as a guide from beyond.
